Upgrade hard drive affect microsoft hardware fingerprint install#
Even though cloning is quick and easy, with a lot of very user friendly software, a clean install of Windows 10 on any new drive is going to give you the best, most reliable results. Best guess is that the laptop didn't know where to install Windows updates or something like that. The formatting of the HDD now destined to be mass storage hadn't cleared the drive properly (which was probably my fault) but as I discovered during the install process, the SSD had too many partitions for Windows on it. Upon completion and booting, being presented with a choice of drive to boot from sounded alarm bells, and then it became clear what had happened.ĭuring the cloning process the partitions had become a total mess. In the end, resetting the laptop resulted in an endless boot loop and so it came to pass that a clean install was required. Just as though I'd turned it on for the first time.

If money is no objector if you’re limited to a single drive connection in your laptopyou can spend quite a lot to get a multi-terabyte SSD.

The laptop just booted straight back to Windows. This makes an SSD an especially attractive upgrade if you already have a hard drive, since you can move the operating system over and demote the hard drive to storage duties.

Every time the update would download, reboot to install and nothing happened. I installed Windows7 last december and have used 4 different motherboards with 4 different graphics cards and 2 different processors since then. That is, until I tried to install a Windows Update. depends on which version of Windows youre using. Windows 10 was on the new SSD, everything was booting very fast, no drama.

I checked that the driver was present and working via Properties and added a PIN as Hello seemed to want that and at that point I was stumped. At each upgrade of OS there were some features that appeared to be incompatible with both 8.1 nad Win 10.

Shortly after getting the notebook, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and then, later still, Windows 10. I worked out that the fingerprint reader was the root of the problem (the reader lamp never lit). I have a HP Envy dv7 - 7338EA which I bought new in late 2013 with Windows 8 installed. I made a hardware change (excluding hard drive). When that had completed, Windows Hello reported that it was not available. My Digital license was linked to my Microsoft account. until I did the fresh install of Windows 10 to resolve the Updates failures. When I began to use Windows Hello, there were regular failures, either in Hello or in SimplePass and I concluded that there may be some incompatibility with Windows 10 (subsequently confirmed by an HP Support agent when helping me to sort out a different issue.Īfter I removed the SimplePass software, retaining the fingerprint reader driver, Windows Hello worked seamlessly. If setup does not start automatically, click Start > File Explorer > This PC > open the drive containing the Windows 10 setup files, then double click Setup.exe. I never could get it to work launching programs or apps on my notebook though. If you are installing from a DVD or USB thumb drive, insert or connect it, then click the on screen notification. I found it to be fairly awkward to use - although once set up, it seemed to work well in launching websites. I had decided some time ago to stop using the SimplePass software. Unlike a driver update, these updates should only be performed for users who are experiencing hardware related issues with their drives. Thank you for your clear response to my problems with the fingerprint reader on my Envy dv7. Firmware updates resolve hardware related issues you may be experiencing with the CD drive, such as being unable to read some CDs or may update the region code on your DVD drive. Perhaps I need to get a separate driver for the fingerprint reader.Ĭan one of you seriously competent specialists out there give me a hand with this please? I am wondering if I need to install some elements of SimplePass - or perhaps a later version of SimplePass. I have ensured that I have a login PIN but when I try to setup Windows Hello, I get the message that it is not available on this machine. I eventually managed it with help from Microsoft Support but when the (fresh) install had completed, I was not able to use Windows Hello and the fingerprint reader did not appear to be working. I recently had great difficulty upgrading my machine to Windows 10 Build 1703 (the Creator's Edition).

The main problems were experienced with HP SimplePass and as I really only wanted to use Windows Hello, I uninstalled SimplePass and Win Hello worked fine. The incompatibilities were not having dramatic effects and I was keen to ensure that I kept bang up to date with Windows to avoid security problems.

Conversations with HP Support agents got the response that neither 8.1 nor Win 10 are supported OS's on this machine. I have a HP Envy dv7 - 7338EA which I bought new in late 2013 with Windows 8 installed.
